Children’s Dental Care
As a member of the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry Program (ABCD) our dental team focuses on preventative and restorative dental care for Washington’s Medicaid eligible children. Our program is based upon the premise that starting dental visits early, in a positive kid centric environment, will yield positive dental behaviors in parents and children. The earlier a child has access to dental care, the more likely it will be that they have a positive dental experience, less chance of cavities and reduce the need for restorative work in the future.
- Have your child’s mouth checked by our dentist when their first tooth comes in. During your checkup our dentist will look for signs of early tooth decay, talk about daily tooth care including brushing, and discuss your child’s diet and eating habits. Your child may need a fluoride varnish and fluoride drops or tablets if your water does not contain fluoride.
- Parents - take care of your own oral health! If your mouth is healthy, your child is more likely to have a healthy mouth too! You and your child will have a healthy dental future if you remember these four things: brush, floss, choose healthy food options, and set regular dental visits!
Why Dental Health is Important to your Child
Research studies have shown how important it is to start good dental hygiene and oral care early in a child’s life. According to research, the most common chronic childhood disease in America is tooth decay, affecting 50% of first graders and 80% of 17 year olds.
Early treatment prevents problems affecting a child’s health, well-being, self-image and overall achievement.

Why Dental Health is Important to You
Good oral health is important for both adults and children to ensure good overall general health. Preventing tooth decay and gum disease starts at home. By brushing your teeth at home with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day you will help prevent cavities and future oral health problems. Be sure to floss every night. Fluoride is a safe and effective way to keep teeth strong. If you are thirsty, choose water over juice, soda and sports drinks and be sure to chose healthy, fresh food to snack on.
Healthy gums do not bleed. If your gums are bleeding, that is an early sign of gum disease. If your gums are bleeding check your brushing and flossing and visit our dental clinic. Untreated gum disease may be a risk factor for heart and lung disease, stroke and diabetes.
