About The Program

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federally funded program that provides assistance to help low-income families and individuals pay heating bills during the winter.  Assistance is paid directly to the utility or energy provider on the client's behalf.  Homeowners may also qualify for limited heating system repairs.  Assistance is limited to eligible households, one time per year.  Additional energy assistance may also be available from specific private utility Fuel Funds.  Click Here for more information regarding local fuel fund availability.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility is based on household income. The gross income received by all members of the household must be at or below 125 percent of the Federal poverty level.  Click Here to see if your household may be income eligible for LIHEAP assistance.

(PSE-HELP energy assistance may be available if you are a PSE customer living in Lewis or Thurston County.  Click Here to see if your household may be income eligible for this program.)

How are Energy Assistance benefit amounts determined?

Assistance amounts are determined by household size, income, heat source and the previous year's energy usage and are based on availability of funds.

Do we get enough funding to serve everyone in need?

No! Appointments are made on a first come, first serve basis.  If you call in, please follow instructions so timely service can be provided.  The program usually begins in November and continues until all funds are committed.

How do I receive Energy Assistance services?

.

How do I make my Energy Assistance appointment?

Remember, appointments are made on a first come-first serve basis.  Due to the high volume of people in need trying to access these services, it is imperative to process all applicants fair and equally.  Our policy is to make appointments over the phone, first come-first serve.  To be fair to all applying, we do not make appointments electronically (e-mail) nor do we return calls to do so.  Please show patience (as well as persistence)  when calling to schedule.  Though the phone lines become extremely busy when we first start booking appointments, we strongly encourage people not to give up calling if they get a busy signal.  Eventually, you can get through.
